Quote of the Day: Henry David Thoreau

“Live each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit, and resign yourself to the influences of each” (Henry David Thoreau).

Hey guys,

Sorry it took so long to post my quote of the day, I am busy writing my seminar report for my English class.  I think Thoreau may be saying to live each day to the fullest.  It is similar to the “carpe diem” notion, which means seize the day.  It is important to enjoy each day as much as we can because any moment could be our last.  I do not like to think about my impending death, but I know it is best to try to  live a fulfilling life.

  1. I think Thoreau was all about keeping life simple. He thought hard work, and morality were cornerstones, and one built their persona around them.

  2. Yes, this can be another interpretation if this quote. It can kind of build off that idea of “carpe diem,” and seems to sum up nicely what Thoreau could have meant by this quote.

  3. “resign yourself” instigates discussion. Is resign acceptance? Surrender? Capitulation? Or does resign imply enjoy, relish and appreciate? We would have to know what the meaning of resign would be in the time period of his writing to understand.
